The Power of 3 Good Things in a Bad Week

\

Rachel to the Rescue by Elinor Lipman...Yes, that's a White House on the front cover, and, yes, the book is by Elinor Lipman. I think you know what to expect, right? ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Four 1001 Children's Books:
Jennings and Darbishire by Anthony Buckeridge ⭐⭐⭐⭐
The Sentinels by Peter Carter ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Postcards from No Man's Land by Aiden Chambers ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Coram Boy by Jamila Gavin ⭐⭐⭐

I'm trying hard to finish my last six 1001 Children's Books from the library
before Paris in July begins next week.

I posted Words Nobody But Bibliomaniacs Care About. Take a look if you missed it...it's your opportunity to see if you suffer, like I do, from abibliophobia.

Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl celebrated her birthday by suggesting we post our bookish wishes and grant the wishes of others. I was delighted to receive a couple of wonderful books from my blogging friends, and I happily granted a couple of wishes as well.

An unvaccinated family member was asked to wear a mask to our first family gathering in over a year, and he threw a fit and didn't show up. My dear friend got her port this week so she can start chemo soon. My son and daughter-in-law and our two grandchildren will be selling their house and moving four hours away next week.

I have come to rely on counting 3 Good Things each week. Especially when things are rough.

Good Thing #1
The family gathering was delightful.
Everyone was vaccinated. No controversy.

Good Thing #2
My friend Lisa is confident she will beat cancer.

Good Thing #3
My son and his wife will be able to take the money they will get for their house
and buy a big tract of land and a new house in the country with no mortgage.
They will come to see us and we will come to see them often.
And we all know how to Zoom now.

I'm happy you joined us here at the Sunday Salon. Sunday Salon is a place to link up and to share what we have been doing during the week. It's a great way to visit other blogs and join in the conversations going on there.

Some of the things we often talk about at the Sunday Salon:

  • What was your week like?
  • Read any good books? Tell us about them.
  • What other bookish things did you do?
  • What else is going on in your life?

Other places where you may like to link up over the weekend are below. Click on the picture to visit the site.

  1. I love all your Good Things! So happy you could visit with family, we plan a trip later in the year to see our son.
Yea for Lisa! I’ve had cancer twice & early detection & treatment is key.
Very very good about your son’s new home!!

  2. I'm sorry to hear your son and family are moving 4 hours away but it sounds like it will be wonderful for their quality of life... No mortgage sounds like bliss to me! And, as you say, you'll still see them regularly and there's zoom. :)

Glad the family gathering went well. Sorry about pre-gathering drama with the un-vaccinated individual but there will always be one who refuses to be sensible!

Hope you have a good week.

  4. You grab the good where you can. I hope all goes well with your friend. The moving is hard. Four hours is quite aways....

  5. Wishing your friend a lot of good health vibes! And, yay for the great family gathering. Unfortunately we still haven't seen our family since they are all outside the U.S. but still hopeful. Wishing you a great week ahead!

  11. That's a big change for your son but it sounds positive and I hope they'll be happy there! I got my 2nd shot this week and it feels good to feel vaccinated.

  12. I've never read a book by Lipman so I added Rachel to the Rescue to my tbr list and the library

What a great idea That Artsy Reader Girl had on how to celebrated her birthday

I think I'd have worn 10 masks if it meant I could see family members I hadn't seen in in over a year

I know you'll love having your son and daughter in law live closer! I live with my youngest son and next to do my oldest son and his family.

Praying your friend Lisa will beat cancer!

I hope you have a great week!

    1. I am the same way, Vicki. It's incomprehensible that someone would get so upset about this request to mask.

  13. I always love your 3 good things! Sorry about the fit-throwing potential guest, sigh. Just as those who refused to wear masks, these people do try to keep us off guard. But we will prevail!

    Enjoy your week!

  14. Aw I am sorry about your unvaccinated family member having a fit. We have a little push back from some family as well - and since Wyatt can't be vaccinated yet, we just don't see those family members. :( Michigan's numbers are doing really well though right now, so it is good to see the vaccine working!

So happy for your son! That sounds amazing!

  15. And so begins the vaccinated vs unvaccinated trauma. I am proud of your family for sticking by their principles and asking the person to mask up. Too bad they felt that wasn't worth seeing family.

That's great news that your son and his family can buy a house with no mortgage! But, sad that they will be 4 hours away.

  17. My heart and prayers go out to your friend starting chemo. It is a rough road and I wish her much success.

    Have a great week!

  18. We are under a mask mandate for the first time in over a year here thanks to the Delta strain and our governments idiocy with regards to the vaccine rollout.
I’m delighted to have my daughter home for her mid year break, I’m going to find it hard when the kids are permanently moved out, though I wouldn’t begrudge them the chance to be mortgage free!
I hope your friend’s treatment goes well.

Wishing you a great reading week

  22. Dear Debbie, always counting her blessings. That is such a wonderful characteristic!

I registered for my vaccine this week and will hopefully be able to receive it on the 8th of July. Fingers crossed!

So glad you had a wonderful family meeting. We are all staying as far away from each other as possible. It's really bad in SA at the moment. But it's okay! We are sorting out stuff at home and hope to read a lot.

Hope you will have a wonderful week with lots of blessings.

    1. Mareli, I'm glad you are on the list for your vaccine. It makes me sad to see people turning up their noses at the vaccine here while people around the world wait patiently for theirs.

  23. I like you (3) Good and (3) Bad things segment. Too bad for your unvaccinated family member missing a good time. I'll never understand the reasoning of some people but, you did the right thing IMO - I would have done the same.

  26. Wow those are definitely 3 really good things! Can't wait to hear about your visit to see the kids and grandkids at their new home!

What is it with these anti-vaxxers who think they can just show up and infect the entire family? smh Glad you all held firm to your mask mandate. Sorry he chose being stubborn over having a good time with ya'll.

  27. I wish Lisa well.
I just don't understand why someone who isn't vaccinated would throw a fit when asked to wear a mask. My brother is the same way.

  28. Still plenty of unvaccinated people not willing to wear a mask. I’m sorry that family member felt it was more important to not comply, than spending time with the family. I’m glad you still had a good time.

  34. Being mortgage free is just wonderful. Your family gathering must have been so good after so long apart. Yes to vaccination. Not that we are close yet to getting it. Slow roll out here in NZ and Australia. I just have to go click on Rachel to the Rescue!

  35. I always love reading your "3 Good Things." You have such a good attitude, even when life throws you curveballs. Wonderful news about your son's big move and house situation (no mortgage - hooray!), but I know you'll miss having them nearby. At least you won't have to travel too far. I'm sending positive thoughts for your friend and also hoping your family recovers from the vaccination situation. Sigh. People.

  36. When I read your comment about the family member not showing up my first thought was "well that makes for way less drama!". I'm glad you were able to still get together and had a nice time. My thoughts and prayers and good vibes for your friend. Getting that port is such a scary step but it's made things soooo much easier for my son's treatment. He can sleep flat on his stomach even when he's accessed and it doesn't bother him in the slightest. I hope you have a great week.

  39. Sending positive vibes and good wishes your way! I love that you looked at the positive despite the challenging incidents/circumstances. I would probably be still bawling now. Very inspiring and I hope the positive wins over the sadness! So awesome you had a fun family gathering - it has been so good to read about many slowly getting to meet their families after a year of being apart.
