The Ten Books I'd Have Every Elementary Student Read If I Could*

Because of Winn-Dixie
A Wrinkle in Time
Homer Price
The Phantom Tollbooth
Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry
Where the Red Fern Grows
Anne of Green Gables
The Little Prince
Little House on the Prairie
The Voyage of the Dawn Treader

*These are ten I love, and they are all great choices, but I'd never say they are for every elementary student....that's why we have libraries: make your own choices.

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish. This feature was created because we are particularly fond of lists here at The Broke and the Bookish. We'd love to share our lists with other bookish folks and would LOVE to see your top ten lists!

Each week we will post a new Top Ten list that one of our bloggers here at The Broke and the Bookish will answer. Everyone is welcome to join. All we ask is that you link back to The Broke and the Bookish on your own Top Ten Tuesday post AND add your name to the Linky widget so that everyone can check out other bloggers lists! If you don't have a blog, just post your answers as a comment. Have fun with it! It's a fun way to get to know your fellow bloggers.

  1. Ooh nice classic list! I don't think I read many of these as a kid myself, but it's possible I could be forgetting about school ones! LOL!

    Here's my Tuesday Post

    Have a GREAT day!

  3. Oh, I remember Homer Price! I should take a peek at it at work today, just for old time's sake. :)

  4. Great list! I think it's important to give children a chance to grow a love of reading early on and these books seem pretty perfect for that. Though of course, freedom of choice is important :)

  5. I read Little House in elementary school and really loved it! I still need to read Anne of Green Gables. I used to watch a old black and white movie as a kid and adored it. I don't know why I never read the book. Lovely list!

  6. Oh, I've read 9 of them! Well, I started The Dawn Treader, it's where my Narnia adventure ended actually. I haven't read Homer Price, but know that I will one day. Another fabulous list.

  7. Because of Winn Dixie - I LOVED THAT ONE. I should have put it on my list. I re-read it a couple of times. And - Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry. Excellent choices. I'm going to link this to my sister. My niece is 10. Perfect age for some of these titles. :)

  8. Awww, just thinking about reading the titles on this list brings back memories and makes me smile. A Wrinkle in Time and Anne of Green Gables are definitely two of my all-time favorite reads :)

  9. I loved Voyage of the Dawn Treader even though I hardly remember the story now. It enthralled me as a kid. And Where the Red Fern Grows was so sad but I loved it. That and Old Yeller... Little House on the Prairie was fun too, i went through a covered wagon phase where I had to read all that kinda stuff. Plus the show. :) I liked The Cricket in Times Square too.

  10. What great picks! The Chronicles of Narnia and the Anne books were some of my absolute favorites as a child and I was also a fan of A Wrinkle in Time. Somehow I completely missed Phantom Tollbooth and The Little Prince but they're on my list of books to try out for my little one!

  11. The only books on your list I've read is A Wrinkle In Time and The Chronicles of Narnia! I don't remember anything about A Wrinkle In Time except I really enjoyed it! I definitely should give that one a reread. Great list :D

    Here are my Top Ten!

  13. I had picked up A Wrinkle in Time when I was in the library back at elementary but for whatever reason never got around to reading it...Great list!

  14. Roll Of Thunder and Where The Red Fern Grows were both books I actively avoided as a kid, and Winn-Dixie came out well after my own childhood, but I adore the other seven books on here. For years, I pronounced it "Dawn Tree-ayder," because I didn't really get that it was treading the dawn; I just thought it was some cool name.

I also love your caveat about making this a "must read" list. So wise.

  15. Back when I was an elementary school teacher, several of these were indeed require reading. A Wrinkle in Time, Anne of Green Gables, Little House on the Prairie, and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. So great selections!
My TTT lists sci-fi cats to read about instead of doing homework.

  17. I keep hearing of Because of Winn Dixie. I'll have to check that out. I remember thinking The Little Prince was the dumbest thing ever as a sixth grader....but fortunately I reread it as an adult...and realized the books a masterpiece and I was dumb.
