A Record Reading Year; Please Nominate a Book for the Cybils; and Yet Another Hurricane

Once again we prepare for a hurricane in the Gulf. We are west of the storm, on the "clean side," and predictions are for us to get a little rain and wind gusts up to 45 mph. Our neighbors to the east are in our thoughts and prayers.

UPDATE: The storm has passed through here quickly. We got only high wind and a little rain. Louisiana looks like it got hit pretty hard.

It's already a record reading year for me.

Quantity can lead to quality. Last week I finished four very good reads: The Snow Child, The Midnight Library, The Switch, and The Writer's Library. Click the link to see my review of each. Have you read any of these? What are your thoughts?

What better book to read this weekend than A Furious Sky: The Five-Hundred-Year History of America's Hurricanes?!

Have you nominated your favorite children's books of 2020 for the Cybils Awards? Anyone can nominate, and I'd urge you to nominate if you have not done so. Nominations will be taken from the public until October 15, and after that, a window opens for authors and publishers to nominate their own books. Don't know what to nominate? Take a look at these book recommendations for some great ideas, especially recommendations for great fiction picture books. Go here to nominate your favorite children's and young adult books for the Cybils Awards.

I heard author Marilynne Robinson read from her new book, Jack, and discuss her book and the crazy world last week through Houston Inprint. Her perspective along with her ability to thoughtfully reflect on important ideas impressed me. She is a voice to listen to during this time.

Nonfiction November will begin on November 2 and will run through the end of the month. There will be four weeks of prompts: Your Year in Nonfiction; Book Pairing (nonfiction with a fiction); Be the Expert/Ask the Expert/Become the Expert; and New to My TBR. For more information, take a look at Julz Reads.

I wrote posts last week about Books Set in the Afterlife, Birdwatching on the Beach, and (on The Classics Club blog) Nonfiction Classics.

1. I started a poetry writing class on Zoom last week.
2. We spent time with my son and his family for my son's birthday.
3. We socially distanced with my sister and her husband for the first time in months.

I'm happy you found your way to the Sunday Salon. Sunday Salon is a place for us to link up and to share what we have been doing during the week. It's a great way to visit other blogs and join in the conversations going on there.

Some of the things we often talk about at the Sunday Salon:

  • What was your week like?
  • Read any good books? Tell us about them.
  • What other bookish things did you do?
  • What else is going on in your life?

Other places where you may like to link up over the weekend are below. Click on the picture to visit the site.

  1. This last week was catastrophic for Sri Lanka. After never having community transmission, only cases coming from the repatriation flights (airport to quarantine to hospital if sick), we were struck by a literal hurricane of covid. 1080 cases in two days. Contact tracing has not indicated how the lady got the illness and she worked in a massive garment factory. It has cast such a pall over the country. From April we only heard of a case here and two cases from one country or another, and now it is in the community itself.

    1. I am terribly sad to hear this. We live in a big world, and our world depends on all of us to do the right thing. It's shocking for me to see people who ignore the health of others here in America and flagrantly do whatever they wish to do. Sending good thoughts and prayers to you and your country.

  2. Yes, another hurricane. I'm so sorry for all in LA and TX and possibly other states that will be affected. Isn't November usually the time when the hurricanes wind down? Hope so. On a happier note, I've picked up The Midnight Library and hope to read it before long. She sees her former 'school librarian'? Hey, maybe that's a job you could apply for Deb - ha!

  5. I am glad to hear you escaped the latest hurricane; I was thinking about you. Nice to see your son for his birthday! I've only nominated one book for CYBILS (others I wanted were already nominated), but I may do more.

  6. I'm glad you are okay after the hurricane. I'm so sorry for all those effected by it. Take care and stay safe.

  7. The number of hurricanes this year has been crazy! I'm glad this one passed you by with such little effect.

    500 books! Wow!

I'm glad you got to safely spend time with your family this week.

I need to check out nonfiction November. I normally read a lot of horror in October but I'm desperately trying to finish up two nonfiction beooks before I have to return them. They're good but not necessarily what I want right now. I've already had to return one of them once and then wait 3 months to get it back. I'm determined to finish them both on time!

I've seen a lot of good things about The Snow Child and The Midnight Library. I'll check out your reviews.

    Enjoy your week!

  8. Hi there Deb! I've also finished my Goodreads challenge this week, but it's only 54 books and I do hope to read at least another 15 or so for the year.

Glad to hear the hurricane passed you. We had some lovely rain here as well with a couple of days a bit warmer.

I've read The snow child. Loved it..... Touched me deeply. Had a look at your review and glad you felt the same!

Thanks for sharing the Non-fiction November link-up. I don't read enough non-fiction. Might be a good idea to have a look at it!

Hope you will have a wonderful week.

    Lots of love,

  9. That must be awful to have so many storms, I can't even imagine. I'm glad to hear it didn't cause you much trouble.

Wow, reading 500 is amazing! I only once read over a hundred books.

The Snow Child has been on my tbr for ages! I'm happy to know you enjoyed it!

    Have a great week!

  10. I haven't done a recent count of my books year to date. Should do that. I suspect it will be less than usual. Oddly during this time at home I am not reading as much as I usually do. Decided this morning I should stop reading on my phone and use my tablet instead, bigger format.
Also we are used to spending at least 3-4 months out of the country when I would spend more time relaxing and reading.

  12. https://chriswolak.com/2020/10/10/sudden-sea-the-great-hurricane-of-1938-by-r-a-scotti/ Here's another book on hurricanes that you might enjoy or enjoy more, based on your review on Goodreads of the book on hurricanes you did read.

I'm glad to hear that the hurricane left you all unscathed and hope that you are having a good Sunday there in Texas.

  13. Glad the hurricane didn't hit you. The hurricanes this year are crazy. Congrats on your goodreads goal. I might have to lower mine since this year just hasn't been my year of reading.

I hope you have a great week, Happy Reading! :)

  14. Glad the hurricane spared you this go round but I'm ready for this hurricane season to end. I read The Snow Child several years ago and absolutely loved it and am now adding The Midnight Library to my list. I hope you have a wonderful week.

  15. I have two of those books Matt Haig's and Snow Child on my list. I have heard about Matt Haig's other books and have been wanting to get to them.

Glad the hurricane missed you this time. What a season of hurricanes, unfortunately.

Congrats on 500 books! That's amazing.

I'm looking forward to Nonfiction November as well. I'm excited to see what I've read and see where my interests have been this crazy pandemic-filled year.

Have a great week! So glad you were able to see some family and friends!

  20. Thank goodness the hurricane missed you. We felt some of that wind yesterday. Congrats on your reading record! Wow!
I listed to the audiobook of The Switch and loved it. I saw The Midnight Library and it caught my attention so I'll have to pop in to read your review. If you recommend it I'll ask for it at my library. The Nonfiction challenge sounds tempting but my schedule is so tight. We'll see.

  29. Glad you didn't get hit hard by the Hurricane! Poor Louisiana (again)! Also glad you liked The Snow Child which I talked about earlier in the summer -- it was so good right? You have me thinking I should pick up The Midnight Library .... is it (too much) fantasy? magic? thanks.

    1. No, I didn't think it was too much fantasy, and the conclusions I drew from the extensive experiences the main character had in all of the lives she led were helpful, I think.

  30. Wow, you’ve read 500 books? My TBR shelf would love me if I could do that. I’m going to do Nonfiction November! I don’t think I’ll follow the prompts, though. I’ll just read whatever nonfiction I have on my shelves.

  31. I'm sorry Louisiana got hit again, but am glad y'all are ok. What a year! Speaking of years, you have had a great year of reading, haven't you? I loved The Snow Child, as did my husband. I'm interested in The Midnight Library and am happy to see that you enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to Nonfiction November (my favorite challenge!). This has been a good year for me with various challenges. Helps to motivate me to read from my own stacks and I have several lined up for next month!
