I had no idea there were so many paintings of people reading.
All paintings are from the public domain and are posted at Wikiart.
Which is your favorite?
A person reading would make an interesting subject to paint when you think about it
it doesn't surprise me as lots of us love to read
What a beautiful collection. I recognize a few favorites!
I love ALL of these and have used several of them for my Bookish Art posts on my own blog. :D
I especially like Cassatt's "The Pensive Reader" and Matisse's "Girl Reading, Vase of Flowers," but all of them are engaging works of art.
Oh wow Debbie! This is so gorgeous! I also didn't know there were so many paintings of people reading. Which one is my favorite.... Hmmmm - I think anyone of the Matisse ones! I can imagine a cat in one of his paintings.Hope you are having a good week so far!Elza Reads
I LOVE this! So beautiful!
I have a reader's journal which has several of these paintings. I'm partial to Mary Cassatt's "The Reader" and Berthe Morisot's "Reading."
I have two favorites. Man reading a newspaper and Reading Woman with Parasol, which I had to look long and hard at to find the parasol.
I really like the Monet of A Woman Reading. Oh to sit under a tree and read a book.
This one is hard, but if I had to pick, I would pick The Artist's Father Reading a Newspaper and Claude Monet's "The Reader". I don't do as much reading as I used to. Sad.
Mary Cassatt's is a favorite. She just looks so comfortable and totally immersed in her book. I don't recall the Van Gogh painting though and need to look at it more closely. He's one of my favorites so I'm happy to see this one!
I loved this post so inspiring, lovely and informative. Many look familiar but, I needed you to make the connection for me. Thanks Deb.
The Impressionists were especially fond of depicting a person doing some everyday thing, and they are well-represented here. Great idea for an assembly of paintings.best... mae at maefood.blogspot.com
These are all fantastic. The one by Monet is my favourite.
I think I like the Pisarro the best. When I was looking for such a picture for my blog, I noticed most of them are vertical and I needed one that was horizontal. And once I found one, I decided it would have to last me a while!
I like Woman Reading by Manet best if I have to pick one. Like her fresh and curious face. :) Great post!
The Reader is my favourite. They're all lovely, though. :)
nice collection of readers :)
I like The Pensive Reader best for the same reasons your commenters have mentioned, her total immersion in the book. But, painting-wise I love the bright colors of the Picasso. This was a great idea for post, girlfriend.
I really like some of those.
fabulous! My favorite is not on your list! Young girl reading, by Fragonard
I must look for that one.
And here it is: https://www.wikiart.org/en/jean-honore-fragonard/a-young-girl-reading-1776-1
Congrats on the iPhone 12! I read somewhere that people with pace makers and other medical devices implanted should not use the 12 as it could interfere with the waves, or whatever.
LOVED the calendar. It ought to make for a joyous June, for sure. The Girl with the Louding Voice must be really remarkable. I look forward to reading it.
This collection is pure gold. I have seen the Picasso one.Thank you for sharing this gem with me on #WordlessWednesday.Good to have you back, Deb. I go live again next week, but the linky is open for multiple links.Have a wonderful week ahead.Happy reading.
