Rhododendron Pie by Margery Sharp

Today's Featured Book

 Rhododendron Pie by Margery Sharp

Genre: Fiction

Published: 1930

Page Count: 223 pages

Summary:

It was indeed very difficult for the Laventie children not to be a little priggish.

Ann Laventie, the youngest of three children in a long line of anti-social Sussex gentry, doesn't quite fit the mould of her intellectual, elegant, ultra-modern siblings Dick, an artist, and Elizabeth, a high-brow writer. Their father is scholarly and just wealthy enough to focus all his attention on reading and other highbrow pursuits. Ann, on the other hand, worries about being plump, is what might be called a 'people person,' and appreciates the simpler pleasures. As the young Laventies spend more and more of their time in the glitter of London, their differences grow more pronounced, and when Ann returns home with an unsuitably ordinary fiancé, this dazzling, witty battle of the brows reaches its exhilarating climax.

"Mr. Laventie stood at the window of the salon and watched his departing visitors with considerable satisfaction: for he was moderately certain that they would not call again."

"While Ann was dressing for the theatre the following night a curious thing happened. She was sitting on the bed pulling on her stockings (specially beautiful ones, a birthday present from her mother) when quite suddenly she didn’t want to go. It came over her in a big unhappy wave, like remembering one hadn’t posted an important letter or feeling sick in church, and for some seconds Ann sat quite still hoping that it would pass off. It was absurd. She adored the Russian Ballet and was in love with Gilbert Croy, and they’d be sure to have good seats—and still she didn’t want to go. At the extreme pitch of misery she toyed with the idea of having a headache and sending Elizabeth instead. Then sanity returned as she reflected on the infinite complications which always attended her most earnest efforts to deceive. Perhaps after all she would enjoy herself when she got there. Ann’s other foot was growing cold, and she finished dressing so hastily that she had almost had time to get miserable again when Mrs. Weekes stumped in with a square florist’s box."

February 10th - 16th - Do you enjoy reading romance novels? If so, which romance trope is your favorite? (submitted by Billy @ Coffee Addicted Writer)

Some of the romance novels I like.

I do. And I don't.

I don't like soppy romance novels. I don't like Hallmark-ish romance novels.

But I do like them. Smart ones. Silly ones.

And I don't like to admit it.
