Even a Raging Cold Can't Stop This Reader

What I Read Last Week

I came down with a whopper of a cold last week. Congestion. Coughing. Sneezing. But I forged on, and made it through the work week, and slept fourteen hours Friday night. I'm feeling a little better today. I hope I'll be good for Read Across America next week.

I had a wonderful reading week, and started and finished The Shift: One Nurse, Twelve Hours, Four Patients' Lives; Pax; and Justin and the Best Biscuits in the World. I haven't had time to write up reviews yet, but for now I'll just say that all three were excellent.

Annie: More and More Adorable

I bet you have been wishing I'd post a new picture of my adorable granddaughter, Annie, haven't you? Well, here's a photo my daughter-in-law took for Annie's four-month birthday today. She's the cutest baby you have ever seen, right? And such a happy baby.

What Arrived Last Week

Can't wait to start these. Don't they look interesting?!

What I'm Reading Now

Whew. I'm halfway finished with Evicted. What a difficult read it is. All the people in this nonfiction story are poor and struggling to keep a roof over the heads of their families. It's not a cheerful tale. As I was reading along, I started wondering which of the presidential candidates might pick up this book. I sure wish they all would.

What are you reading today?!

What is the Sunday SalonImagine some university library's vast reading room. It's filled with people--students and faculty and strangers who've wandered in. They're seated at great oaken desks, books piled all around them, and they're all feverishly reading and jotting notes in their leather-bound journals as they go. Later they'll mill around the open dictionaries and compare their thoughts on the afternoon's literary intake....That's what happens at the Sunday Salon, except it's all virtual. Every Sunday the bloggers participating in that week's Salon get together--at their separate desks, in their own particular time zones--and read. And blog about their reading. And comment on one another's blogs. Think of it as an informal, weekly, mini read-a-thon, an excuse to put aside one's earthly responsibilities and fall into a good book. Click here to join the Salon.

The Sunday Post is a meme hosted by Kimba at Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It's a chance to share news and recap the past week.

Mailbox Monday was created by Marcia at The Printed Page. We share books that we found in our mailboxes last week.
It is now being hosted here.

Stacking the Shelves is a meme hosted by Tynga's Reviews in which you can share the books you've acquired.

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? is where we share what we read this past week, what we hope to read this week…. and anything in between!  This is a great way to plan out your reading week and see what others are currently reading as well… you never know where that next “must read” book will come from! I love being a part of this and I hope you do too! It's Monday! What Are You Reading? is now being hosted at The Book Date.

    1. Not only is Theresa Brown a nurse, but she is also a former English professor.

  2. Oh, yes, Annie is definitely adorable! Thanks for sharing...and enjoy.

I love Mitchard's books, so I've been eyeing Two If By Sea.

The subject matter in Evicted reminds me of my social work career....and I am not going to go political here, but I doubt that Trump will be reading this one. LOL

Thanks for sharing...and for visiting my blog.

    1. I don't see many of the candidates as readers, and that is unfortunate. We need readers in office, I think.

  3. Today, this morning, I'll be reading Being Mortal by Atul Gawande. I'm reading it a little at a time over Lent. As for your reading, the poetry book looks the best to me, but I've always liked poetry.

    1. This poetry book has some poems that are familiar and some that are new. I like that.

    1. Something about Pax reminds me of Kazuo Ishiguro's The Buried Giant.

    1. It is hard to read aloud thirty-two stories in a week you don't feel well.

  8. Oh I'm so sorry to hear you've been feeling bad. I hate colds and my always tend to drag on for ages. What a sweet picture of Annie! 4 months is such a great age. Their personalities are really coming through but they're still snuggly babies. The Shift looks really good. It's been on my TBR and I'm looking forward to reading it. Have a great week!

  10. Annie is absolutely adorable! Thanks for sharing! And I hope you feel better! Getting a cold in the winter is awful! I had one of those horrible coughs that lasted one a month!

I'm looking forward to your reviews on "The Shift" and Pax. I have Pax in my TBR pile and am waiting for the time when I won't cry my eyes out. Silly huh, but even though I want to read the book, it seems so sad that the little boy and his pet fox are separated. I'm also on board with the poetry book looking interesting! I like poetry, but just never indulge in it regularly. Hope you enjoy it!

  11. That's a very cute picture of Annie - amidst the toys! Reminds me of that scene from ET... hiding in the cupboard amidst the toys!

And you had a good week, despite the cold!

  14. I devoured SHIFT. It really gave me insights into the life of a nurse...life or death stuff and no breaks. Wow.

    Hope you feel better soon.

  16. Being a grandmother is a great job, isn't it? Hope you week continues to show improvement and you get all your books read. Reading aloud is hard for me even without being sick. I don't think I remember to breathe and then I start to yawn! Funny!
