Experimenting with Sweet Empanadas

I made my first batch of empanadas when I was sixteen. They were savory, with ground beef and olives and raisins, and I loved them. I make savory empanadas all the time.

Sweet empanadas? Nope, that's new to me. But when my d-in-law asked if I'd make some for a family gathering, I thought I'd experiment.

I tried two types of dough. One (left) was a traditional buttery pastry dough. The other (right) had a cream cheese base.

I used four kinds of fillings (l to r): pumpkin, blueberry, pineapple-jalapeno, and raspberry.

I sprinkled some with sugar, and I used an egg wash on others.

My conclusions?
*I liked the pastry dough better than the cream cheese.
*Of the four fillings, I liked the pineapple-jalapeno best.
*And the sugar sprinkled empanadas were better than those that were egg-washed.

I will make these again.

  2. I've only made savory empanadas before but could see a sweet filling being sort of like a pie.

  3. We make a chicken empenada, which is delicious, but my Argentinian friends swear that it shoukd only be made with beef. I think they would keel over at the thought of a sweet empenada! The best empenada I ever had was in Chile, big, tasty, spicy and hot!

  9. My favorite empanadas have beef, raisins, brown sugar, and other flavors —both sweet AND savory. I do like turnovers which are similar but not the same name.

  10. Oh what a great experiment! My grandmother made similar turnovers/cookies/empanadas and always used a cream cheese pastry. I'm going to try it with the butter pastry.

  11. Your photos made me hungry. Growing up, my grandmother made "fried pies" filled with apples or other fruit filling. I'm not sure why we called them "fried" since I'm pretty sure she baked them. Whatever you call them -- fried pies or empanadas -- or whether or not they're sweet or savory, they're a treat! Thanks for sharing your baking creations. I just wish I could taste them.
