North on the Wing, Wilderness Essays, and A Place to Belong

Beneath a Scarlet Sky by Mark Sullivan (World War II in Italy)
Exposed by Jean-Philippe Blonde (Gentle French thriller)

I also finished these children's picture books last week:

The Forest for the Trees: An Editor's Advice to Writers by Betsy Lerner
Friday's Tunnel by John Verney
The Gold Bug Variations by Richard Powers
A Place to Belong by Cynthia Kadohata
Wilderness Essays by John Muir

I wrote more blog posts in one week than I ever have before. I focused much of my time this week on writing What Happened to My America? I love to hear your thoughts about everything I post, but I'd especially love to hear your thoughts on this (very long) essay.

What Happened to My America? And How Can We Fix Things? Thoughts about Our Towns, Alienated America, and Love Your Enemies

I celebrated Mother's Day all weekend, remembering my mom who passed away nine years ago; getting my toes done with family; going to church; and enjoying a meal.

...
I Vanna-White-ed with my husband as he shared his mineral collection this week with a local group.

How did your week go?

Did you finish any good books?

Have you run across anything book-ish that you would like to share with us?

I invite you to link up here and/or at the Sunday Salon page on Facebook each weekend (Friday-Saturday-Sunday-Monday) and let us know what you have been doing. Visit other blogs and join in the conversations going on there.

  2. Some of those minerals are pretty. The purple shards are my favourite. I'm sure your husband collects them for more serious reasons though!

  4. It sounds like a nice way to spend Mother's Day.
On books to film, so many times it just doesn't work well on screen, too much is left out. I love Gone With the Wind also, it's a favorite classic both film and novel.
    Enjoy your week!

    1. Films that arrive on screen to me cold, pre-book, are best.

  5. Oh what a lovely way to celebrate Mother's Day - getting nails done together:)). And I LOVE your husband's rock collection. I have a few polished stones arranged on my desktop monitor stand that I fondle when I'm writing as they are a comfort to hold. Have a wonderful week, Deb:)

  6. Sounds like a good week for you. Love the toenails! I think people can appreciate a movie better if they read the book. There's just too many times important things are left out. If you haven't read the book, you might not understand some of the motivation in a movie. Although I do agree that Gone With the Wind was a great movie. Hope you have a good week.

  10. You had an awesome week. I stayed up late reading last night and overslept this morning, so this week is already off to a rushed start :)

  13. "Gentle Thriller" is an interesting juxtaposition of words.
I plan to spend some time later this afternoon reading your "America" post. It might influence some of my summer reading.

  16. Mother's Day is always a sad time for me. I lost my dad that day thirteen years ago now and my mom followed him three months later. I love the variety of books you choose to read. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

  19. p.s. I haven't read any of the books you listed, including Scarlet Sky!!!!! Today is Tuesday. P. read it when Teddy gave us her copy for the LFL. I attended the R.A.T.(Reading All Together) Pack meeting where Teddy presented it, and enjoyed the people immensely. I am attending tonight.
