The Other Side by Jacqueline Woodson

I also read and reviewed eight other picture books:

Sit-In: How Four Friends Stood Up by Sitting Down

The Youngest Marcher: The Story of Audrey Faye Hendricks, a Young Civil Rights Activist

Heroes for Civil Rights by David Adler

Pies from Nowhere: How Georgia Gilmore Sustained the Montgomery Bus Boycott

The Oldest Student: How Mary Walker Learned to Read

Howard Thurman's Great Hope

What Do You Do With a Voice Like That? The Story of Extraordinary Congresswoman Barbara Jordan

We Are the Change: Words of Inspiration from Civil Rights Leaders

War and Peace
 by Leo Tolstoy
Devotions by Mary Oliver
50 Ways to Draw Your Beautiful Ordinary Life: Practical Lessons in Pencil and Paper
A Bad Birdwatcher's Companion by Simon Barnes
The Collected Stories of Katherine Anne Porter

I'm still reading all of these. I went over 50% for War and Peace after reading the story almost daily since January 1st.

Good Thing #1: My daughter-in-law covered the story of a woman finally released from the hospital in Chicago after a long hospitalization due to the coronavirus.

Good Thing #2: This national park puzzle. How many of the 61 US national parks can you name?

Good Thing #3: My great-nephew, 7, designed and drew this rhinoceros for a Texas wine label.

Bonus Good Thing: While we were cleaning out during the pandemic, we ran across this old record player and a stack of over a hundred old albums. It's been fun to listen to them.

I'm very happy you found your way to the Sunday Salon. There are no requirements for linking up at Sunday Salon. Sunday Salon is simply a place for us to link up and to share what we have been doing during the week. Sunday Salon is a great way to visit other blogs and join in the conversations going on there.

Some of the things we often talk about at the Sunday Salon:

  • What was your week like?
  • Read any good books? Tell us about them.
  • What other bookish things did you do?
  • What else is going on in your life?

Other places where you may like to link up over the weekend are below. Click on the picture to visit the site.

  1. How wonderful to hear what you are up too. Love these Sunday memes. Maybe I should try them myself. I love the dino on the wine bottle. He must be very proud.
I think that in Sweden, as maybe the case elsewhere, people will have empty storages and attics after this pandemic. Seems a lot of people are taking the opportunity to clean out. Hope you enjoy the music from the old records.

    1. When we spend so much time at home, we discover all things we have in the back of the cabinets and in the closets, I think.

  2. Lots of books today that look interesting, but The Otherside really sounds like something I would like to read right now. Also, thanks for sharing the video- For some people, the Coranavirus is really really scary.

  3. I love seeing the stories of people coming out of hospital and beating this retched disease. I get all teary when they show the hospital staff cheering for them and the hospital's "success song" played over the loudspeaker so everyone knows someone is going home.

  4. You have all kinds of fun things happening this week. Finding the record player AND lots of records will keep you happy for awhile, I bet. And I love the rhino! He's 7 and already an artist :)

  7. That news story is just what we need more of today!
Your great nephew did a great job!
I wish I still had my old albums but I gave them away :(

  8. Now that's a news story I like! Loads of books for you. And that puzzle is a good one. I have a fun one waiting for me at the lake of the theatre section of the Gotham Book Store.

Thanks for coming by Marmelade Gypsy and leaving such a nice comment! You're doing Paris in July again, aren't you? Me, too!

    1. It was a fairly easy puzzle, I thought, with only 500 pieces.

  10. I love how we can spend time clearing out and organizing, with this unexpected time on our hands.

I haven't seen my record player in years, not since one of my earlier moves. When I downsized in 2007, I found lots of record albums. My youngest son claimed them. LOL.

Enjoy your week, and stay safe!

    1. These albums sat in the flood waters of our apartment in 1979 for three days, and many of them are slightly warped. They are not in great condition for resale, but they still (mostly) play.

  11. I am so impressed with the drawing of the rhino. And what fun to break out the old record player AND the records! I'm guessing that brought back a shedload of memories:). Have a great week:)).

  13. Children's books are such a great way to start discussions on social issues with our children. My kids are teens now and the discussions center around what's being posted on Youtube. It's such a scary world out there but as parents we need to have these discussions with our kids. So important!

I love that story of the librarian who was creative and used the drone to deliver books to kids stuck at home. It's amazing the treasures (and junk) we can find when we start decluttering! Yay to your grandnephew for his design. You must be proud. Enjoy your reading week!

  16. I bought an old record player unit with lots of records. I haven't listened to them. I must as it's sure to bring back good memories.

  18. You’re brave for tackling War and Peace. I want to read that someday, but I know it’ll probably take me a year to get through. That record player is cool! A few years ago, I found some records in my parents’ closet, but they had nothing to play them on.

Aj @ Read All The Things!

    1. Reading a chapter a day makes it easy. It helped me to print out a picture of all the people in the story so I can keep all the characters straight.

  19. How I wish we hadn't gotten rid of our old albums!! I can only imagine how much fun you must have had listening to them... what a treat. Love the wine bottle, too... and congrats on passing the 50% mark of War and Peace.

    1. I tried to read War and Peace a few years ago, and I never got past the first hundred pages. I think I will finish this time.

  20. We have that same puzzle and put it together a few weeks ago. It is surprising how many National Parks I had never heard of before. We hiked in one of the oldest parks yesterday, Mt.Rainier National Park, which is the whole mountain so it has many entrances. We were at the very southern side of it for a hike in an old grove of giant trees, some over 1000 years old. Wow.

  21. I bought a jigsaw puzzle, but I'm afraid the cats will steal the pieces if I get it out. Hahaha.... My daughter's battle of the books read Jacqueline Woodson's Brown Girl Dreaming a couple years ago. She certainly has a way with words :) Thanks for sharing and enjoy your week!

  22. What a score finding that old record player and albums. Kids these days would not even know what records are!

  23. How awesome for your great-nephew to have his design featured on a wine bottle! Congratulations to him!

Oh, I need to read Sit-In with my daughter. I've recently read the March books and the incident itself is fresh in my mind. Thanks for sharing the other books as well.

  24. Sounds like you are making some good finds in closets. I got rid of all my albums and the record player to hear them on when I retired and moved. They had just been gathering dust. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

  27. That national park puzzle is fantastic. I probably couldn't get close to naming all of the parks but having a puzzle would help & be a fun way to learn. The old record player is neat, gosh what year is it? I have a puzzle on my kitchen table but days pass where I don't work on it ... so there it sits -- part way finished, sigh.

  28. Oh, my gosh! I had that Godspell album and listened to it constantly. I can probably start humming several songs right now. What a trip down memory lane.

Love the wine bottle label. Very impressive!

Love that National Parks puzzle. I've got a little book to keep track of which parks we've visited. I was not aware of many of the parks, but I hope to get to as many as possible.

Great story about the COVID survivor. Your DIL did a great job with the story. Such a talented family, Deb!
