Characters Whose Jobs I Wish I Had: Characters With Bookish Jobs

Librarian, of course, would be my top choice. As it was in real life.

Mrs. Elm is a librarian where patrons can choose books to relive their lives in The Midnight Library.

Nicole Anisse is a librarian in Paris in The Paris Librarian.

Sylvia Blackwell is a librarian in a 1950s quaint English market town in The Librarian.

Alison Sheffield is a librarian in The Dewey Decimal System of Love.

Alice Wright is a packhorse librarian in The Giver of Stars.

Israel Armstrong is a bookmobile driver in The Case of the Missing Books.

Matthias is an archivist at the Princeton Library in The Archivist.

A bookshop owner/bookseller would be fun.

Nina Redmond was a librarian and then is a mobile bookshop owner in The Bookshop on the Corner.

Clay Jansen is a bookseller at a magical bookshop in Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookshop.

Monsieur Perdu is a floating bookshop owner in Paris, mending broken hearts and souls, in The Little Paris Bookshop

Sarah Smith is a small-town bookshop owner who temporarily runs a bookshop in Paris for a friend in The Little Bookshop on the Seine.

Emilia is a bookshop owner in her small town in the Cotswolds in How to Find Love in a Bookshop

How about coffee shop owner?

Kei is a coffee shop owner in Before the Coffee Gets Cold.

Monica is a cafe owner in The Authenticity Project.

There are lots of other bookish jobs I'd like.

Maud Bailey is a scholar researching the lives of Victorian poets in Possession.

Casey Peabody is a (wanna-be) writer in Writers and Lovers.

Ramona Keene is a literary journey planner in Eighty Days to Elsewhere.

The Queen is the Queen of England who is guided in her decision-making by her obsessive reading in The Uncommon Reader.

Top Ten Tuesday was created by
The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together. Each Tuesday That Artsy Reader Girl assigns a topic and then post her top ten list that fits that topic. You’re more than welcome to join her and create your own top ten (or 2, 5, 20, etc.) list as well. Feel free to put a unique spin on the topic to make it work for you! Please link back to That Artsy Reader Girl in your own post so that others know where to find more information.

  1. Deb, you and I would love the same kinds of jobs. I worked in libraries for 15 years and bookshops and coffee shops oh yes, they go together right? Great post.

  2. Of course Librarian would have made your list. It sure makes mine as well, but not Elza's. She says my job keeps me away from home too much. She would have liked to be The Queen of England though...

    Happy TTT Debbie!

Ten jobs Elza would have loved to have

  5. Being a librarian has always seemed so much fun--but I don't think I could handle all the mistreated books, haha!

  6. Great selection! I was lucky to have my dream job (bookseller) for over a decade. Nothing better than organizing the books and talking to customers about my recommendations (and getting some from them, as well). If you haven't read The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin, I can recommend it. The main character owns a bookstore and I loved the characters.

  10. Oh, I'd love to be a bookseller especially if I could have my own bookshop! Some of the ones you mention here sound fabulous.

  11. If the college I went to had offered a library science major, I would have totally done it. Unfortunately, they had just axed the program. I think I would have totally loved being a librarian. How fun that you got to live the dream!

    Happy TTT!

  13. This is a tough category to do. I immediately thought of librarian or book shop worker (don't really want to own my own business, but would love to work in one).

    1. I would hire someone else to do the business part of owning a bookshop.

    1. Yes, and in Paris. It would also be nice if I could speak fluent French.

  15. What an enjoyable theme - I was pleased to see Coffee Shop Owner as a bookish job. That would be the type who doesn't mind people lingering over their coffee for hours while they read or talk about books. This whole post makes me want to read more books about bookish people.

  16. What a great choice. If I hadn't dreamed of having your job all my life, that would have been my second choice. Having said that, I would have loved to be a librarian myself, as well. I did help in all the schools my boys went to not just in the classrooms but also in their libraries.

Possession is one of my favourite books, I've read it several times.

I was surprised not to find Carlos Ruiz Zafón's on your list. His books about the "cemetary of forgotten books" are great. If it interests you, start with "The Shadow of the Wind".

Thanks for visiting my TTT earlier.

  17. Your list just has me smiling because I'd love all of these jobs. :)

  18. I love your list! The careers in books I am attracted to are book related ones such as editor or author. I also love stories where the focus is a gardener, especially on a large estate with huge gardens and then there is a musical career choices that atrract me as well.

I can't garden well, I am not musically inclined nor graceful enough to be a dancer, Ha!

  19. Penumbra's bookstore (and of course being a librarian and a bookseller) made it on my list too!my packhorse librarian was Cussy from The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek (the book that is forever entwined with The Giver of Stars)

  20. What a delightful idea for a post! I'm saving this to use as a TBR list, too. TY!
