Can I Write a 50,000 Word Novel With No Ideas for the Characters or the Plot?

I felt like I was stuck at home for so long, and then in recent days, we have taken trips to North Texas, to Chicago, to Arkansas, and then to North Texas again. We loved seeing our family and we loved doing some traveling, but we are happy to be at home now.

I got my vaccine booster on Thursday. Hurray! I can see a return to my Christian Meditation group and the YMCA very soon.

I'm officially old! I celebrated a wonderful 65th birthday last Monday.

The Lincoln Highway by Amor Towles ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I'm reading nothing but nonfiction this month:

Adventures on the Wine Route by Kermit Lynch
Extraordinary Insects: The Fabulous, Indispensible Creatures Who Run Our World by Anne Sverdrup-Thygeson
What's So Special About Dickens? by Michael Rosen
If God is Love, Don't Be a Jerk: Finding a Path that Makes Us Better Humans by John Pavlovitz
The Gastronomical Me by M.F.K. Fisher

SJ at Reading with a Llama notified me last week that I was the winner of her Halloween Giveaway! I will be receiving three books, a tote bag of my choice from Mabel & Nanny's Designs Etsy store, and a Witches Brew scented candle from Sandy Hollow Fragrances & More. Here's the tote bag I chose. Thank you so much!

NaNoWriMo has begun. I have no characters. I have no plot. I don't even have an idea for my book. Will that stop me? No, I will write anyway. Let's see what happens.

Last week I posted here at Readerbuzz:

Good Thing #1:
I got my vaccine booster!

Good Thing #2
We are not traveling this week.

Good Thing #3:
I had a fabulous birthday.

  1. I love your plan for a novel. One time I tried writing a story. I figured it would be like reading, as I went along I would just see what happened to the characters and what they were like. I didn't get very far. I have read how a lot of authors start with an incredibly detailed plan.

I am loving The Lincoln Highway. Your nonfiction sounds good too.

  2. Hooray for your booster! I'm getting mine (and a flu shot) next week. I'm not looking forward to the side effects (I had them with the second shot), but it's much better than getting Covid. I'm so glad you enjoyed The Lincoln Highway as well as you did. I bought a copy to give to my husband for Christmas. Of course, I'll get to read it once he's finished. :) Have fun with NaNoWriMo. Perhaps you can share your favorite passage with us once you've finished? I'm glad you had a wonderful birthday. Have a great week!

  4. I finished No Country for Old Men and The Reading List this week, both just as good as advertised. Congratulations on reaching that important life milestone, and I'm sure you'll come up with something for NaNoWriMo. Have fun with it.

  5. Happy Birthday Deb. I totally get the idea of it nice being home. It is great to travel, but as Dorothy said in The Wizard of Oz, there's no place like home. Congratulations on getting the booster. I have to wait another month to get in the 6 months they want between shots. Enjoy all your upcoming Non-Fiction reads.

  7. I adopted your 3 Good Things idea this week, along with it's buzzy bee header. We all need to focus on good things right now, it seems to me.

  8. I love and dearly miss traveling but there is something so wonderful about having some time at home. I had my vaccine booster scheduled for this past Friday but I was feeling so congested and blah that I rescheduled for next week. Happy birthday! So glad you had a wonderful one and I hope you have a wonderful week!

  9. Good luck with Nano.
I did it a couple of years ago and produced 50,000 words of drivel that I haven't had the courage to look at since. Hopefully you will be better at it than I was.
    And Happy Birthday.

  10. Happy Birthday! And congrats on getting your booster! I still don't qualify for one here. I keep hoping that will change soon. It's been 9 months since my 2nd shot, but I don't meet the criteria our area is imposing. I am glad you were able to do some traveling and visit family! I understand the joy of being home again though. Good luck with your writing this month! Have a great week, Deb.

  14. Happy birthday! So far, everyone I know felt just fine after their booster. I hope your experience was the same.

Congratulations on winning the giveaway! That's a generous prize.

Good luck with NaNoWriMo! I need to just make a goal of writing *something* every day, even if it's just a journal entry.

    Enjoy your week!

  15. Have to wait the 6 months after last shot to get booster, so it will be in December.
Happy Birthday, you are a few years younger than me!!
Just travelling locally for the time being. It will be our second winter not going to warmer climes, but we are good with that.

  16. Winning book-related prizes is always fun! And happy birthday; 65 looks good on you!

I also got my vaccine booster so feel good about that. I am jealous of your travels and want to do some myself. Now I just need to choose a destination....

  18. I'm planning to get the booster and the shot for son as long as it's released to children. I hope you keep busy with Nanowrimo, I forgot that it's this month. I've met some great writers in my area because of that writing marathon.

  25. The Lincoln Highway and Book Girl are both on my wish list, so I'm glad to see you rated them both so highly. I'd hoped to read only nonfiction this month, but my library hold of the new Elizabeth Strout arrived and I couldn't resist. Happy to hear you enjoyed your birthday and hooray for a booster!! Have a great week.

  26. Oh, Happy Birthday! The Lincoln Highway and Book Girl sound interesting, I'm glad you enjoyed them! I've been curious about them for some time.

  27. Belated BD wishes--sorry I missed it. I haven't been able to start Book Girl yet. I am itching to get at it. I am doing November Nonfiction too. A few years ago, I wouldn't have even considered attempting it. Thanks for encouraging me to try nonfiction.

  28. Happy Birthday! So many good things to celebrate, a birthday, booster shot and time with family! Have fun with NaNoWriMo! I tried it once but gave up on the third or fourth day. Haha... Maybe I'll try it again another day.

  30. You and I have two things in common this month: vaccine booster and a birthday!

I haven't done any traveling, but I've been out to more restaurants this month.

    Enjoy your week!

  31. I got my booster shot this past Thursday too. Good luck with NoNoWriMo. I am a consumer, not a producer, and have never felt any desire to write a book. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

  32. Hmm dangerous to call in I see a book I just have to put into my TBR. The Book Girl one. i need to read Amor Towles previous book before I get to the latest one. Aha funny one of our radio guys did a little segment on his wife turning 65. He talked about going to bed with a pensioner! Tongue in cheek. He is 73!
