Gulf Coast Bird Observatory: Spring Fling

Each day during the month of April, birders are welcomed from all around the world at the Gulf Coast Bird Observatory on Quintana Beach in Texas. A tally is kept for each day of all birds sited by birders. During my time there as a volunteer manning the booth at the site, I was delighted to spot a Baltimore Oriole, an Orchard Oriole, and a Cape May Warbler (pictured with orange).

And because I'm a reader, I have to share a couple of great narrative nonfiction reads on birding with you:

And for the very young birder:

  1. Great that you volunteer. Whenever I leave a cut orange in my yard, I attract bees. My birds don't go for citrus, I guess.

  8. You must get tons of migrating birds in that area. We currently have Townsend Warblers and Orioles here and they are so beautiful!

  10. Deb,

I love seeing birds in our backyard. It makes me happy to see them flying to and fro, sometimes small birds will land on our bell bouy windchim as if they want to take a peep inside a people house. :) It's so cute! Nice photos!

  11. Looks like fun! Funny that the birds you mentioned are from my area in the mid-Atlantic! We see Baltimore Orioles but had never heard of a Cape May Warbler (also close to me) so enjoyed that photo especially.

I have H Is for Hawk sitting on my shelf - I really need to get to it!

    Enjoy the weekends -

  12. What a great bird blind! My kids have been becoming more interested in birds, so we may take up bird watching.

  13. I hadn't heard before of putting out cut oranges to attract birds. We hear Golden Orioles in the woods nearby, but are yet to actually see one. When they arrive this year I shall try tempting them closer with oranges. Thanks for the tip!
