I Fall in Love with Justice and I Bake a Gazillion Cookies

What can I say about Justice: What's the Right Thing to Do? by Harvard professor Michael J. Sandel that will convince you to read this book?  The videos of Sandel's lectures at Harvard on Justice shared with me by Bonnie of Bonnie's Books added greatly to the experience of reading this book. Are you feeling discouraged about the state of politics in the world? Do you worry that young people are self-involved and hopelessly cut off from important issues? Read this book. It has renewed my hope in the world.

Anything but nonfiction!

(I think I burned myself out on nonfiction during November. I'm going to take a break from it for a while and stick to fiction, I think.)

Here's what I am reading right now:

Poldark: Demelza by Winston Graham
Birds, Beasts and Relatives: The Corfu Trilogy by Gerald Durrell
The Flatshare by Beth O'Leary

I joined the Thankfully Reading Weekend hosted by Jenn of Jenn's Bookshelves. There were no rules to the weekend; we simply planned to devote a good amount of time to reading, and to try to meet some of our reading challenges and goals for the year. I finished three nonfiction books. That's a good reading time.

And, just for fun, I created a Thankfully Reading BINGO game. I offered a $25 gift card to Book Depository to one person who played. I randomly selected Bonnie of Bonnie's Books. It's interesting that Bonnie was chosen as I was feeling so much gratitude to Bonnie for sharing the book and lectures on justice with me; perhaps some of that gratitude seeped into the random selection process.

It's that wonderful time of the year when everybody comes up with a list of favorite books of the year. NPR Books couldn't seem to narrow down its favorites; there are 369 books on NPR Book Concierge.

Have you run across any lists of favorite books of 2019? Share them with me.

I've read 199 out of 222 Cybils picture books and board books. I have 23 books to go. Still busily reading and reviewing picture books....

For our final book club discussion of the year, I decided to wrap a bunch of books and share them with others in the club.

Let the holiday baking frenzy begin. I baked cookies all day one day, and I still did not finish.

  1. I know you chose Bonnie at random but I'm glad to see she won!

I've read 15 of the books on NPR's list but own quite a few of the others. I won't work on my list until the year is over.

    1. Working on my best-of-the-year list is one of my favorite things to do at this time of the year. I enjoy having several of these lists, and I love seeing others' lists.

  4. I am starting to put my best reads list together but 369 sounds a little over the top, LOL.

    1. I keep wondering how many people had to read new books to come up with a list of the best 369.

  7. Those cookies are making me drool! LOL.

You accomplished so much this week, and throughout the month of November. Enjoy the holidays, and thanks for visiting my blog.

  8. Oh my goodness - you're a whirlwind of activity, Deb! What a lot of cookies... I hope you're enjoying Poldark and the Gerald Durrell omnibus. By coincidence - I read both books another lifetime ago when I was a teenager. I thoroughly enjoyed them both and I hope you, too are loving them. When you can cram them inbetween those children's books you are reading. Have a lovely week, Deb!

    1. Funny, as I'd never heard of Poldark until I saw the series on PBS.

  10. The title of this post is #LifeGoals. Did you wrap up specific books for specific book club members, or was it a blind drawing type of thing? I pulled a couple of books off my shelf when I got together with friends this week and passed them along too. I buy SO MANY books for my classroom, but don't usually have a need to keep books for myself. If it's signed, or if it's by Ursula K. LeGuin, I keep it, otherwise, I look for a new home for them.

    1. Lol! I wrapped up books I thought people might like, but I let them choose what they wanted. I'm the same way with books I have. I've got a huge stack of Cybils I plan to donate to our district's Book Bus.

    1. I hate that I read so much nonfiction that now I'm shying away from it.

  12. Two of the books I’d hoped to read for Nonfiction November just came in at the library so I’ll be reading them this week, the event actually reminded me how much I enjoy nonfiction and I want to read more :) Flatshare is still on my TBR though.

Wishing you a great reading week

  13. I needed a change of pace, post-nonfic November too. Justice sounds really good though. Definitely need some hope. And cookies. Those go together, right?

  15. I did bake bread this week because cookies are not on our new eating plan. Congrats on being so close to finishing all your Cybils books. I suppose the last ones are the hardest to find. Come see my week here. Happy reading!
