Little Women, Little Women, and More Little Women

This was a week of getting back to normal after being away from home for seventeen days. Jet lag, I've learned, is a real thing. And it didn't help that the days here were rainy and gray and cold. I almost felt like I was hibernating.

I hurriedly read The Annotated Little Women edited by John Matteson this week. Our book club was reading and discussing it on Tuesday night, so I rushed to finish it. This edition of the book has photographs from Louisa May Alcott's life, including photos of her, her family, her homes, and objects of meaning to her, as well as footnotes throughout the book, explaining the importance of events in the lives of the March family, and relating these events to actual events in the Alcott family. It was a wonderful read, and the discussion at book club was also good. Our club's consensus on the usual questions: (1) Jo is the best character, (2) Laurie should not have married Jo (too much of a brother), (3) the book is still relevant today.

I'm trying to read and review all the books that arrived while I was in Paris, some nonfiction picture books about famous women in America, a bizarre story for adults about a man who meets the doppelganger for his first love, a children's chapter book about America's Outlaws, some cookbooks, a couple of new board books, a wildly funny early chapter book about a girl who finds a pony in a grocery store and brings it home to her apartment on the twelfth floor, and a children's spy book set in---I almost couldn't believe it when I saw it---Paris.

Why I will always read children's books: Travis Jonker's More Spring 2020 Books I'm Looking Forward To. I dare you to take a look at all covers of the picture books and chapter books and graphic novels and nonfiction books coming out this spring and not head to your library and see what you can find. Who can resist Baby Clown? A new Wayside School book? Pizza and Taco: Who's the Best? Explosion at the Poem Factory? Llama Unleashes the Alpacalypse?

I was happy to discover Masterpiece's Little Women free on Amazon, so I naturally watched it this week.

Some of us from the book club are going to see the new movie today.

I'd love to hear about your week.

I'm very happy you found your way to the Sunday Salon. There are no real requirements to linking up at Sunday Salon. Sunday Salon is simply a place for us to link up and to share what we have been doing during the week. Sunday Salon is a great way to visit other blogs and join in the conversations going on there.

Some of the things we often talk about at the Sunday Salon:

  • What was your week like?
  • Read any good books? Tell us about them.
  • What other bookish things did you do?
  • What else is going on in your life?

Other places where you may like to link up over the weekend are below. Click on the picture to visit the site.

  1. I need that copy of Little Women! The new movie is wonderful. I'd see it in the theater again and I rarely do that.

    1. I was thrilled to find it for sale for 1.99. Such a good book. And I agree completely about the movie.

  2. I know we'll see the new Little Women when it comes out on streaming. We already love Greta Gerwig. As for me here today, besides visiting here (being second to comment - dang, I try to "beat" Kathy ;) ) , I am heading off to our local state university to find a quiet place to read at the library.

  5. I haven't seen the movie Little Women yet. I read the book a million years ago. LOL Since I read about your trip, I seem to find more and more books set in Paris and now I want to go! LOL Instead, I'm just reading about it :) Have a great week!

    1. You should plan a trip. Winter travel to Paris is cheap.

  6. I'll be curious to hear if you decide to post on the new movie version. I want to see it but haven't yet. We're Greta Gerwig fans around here.

  7. Little Women in the one classic that I've enjoyed reading. I saw the movie a few months ago and enjoyed it though I thought the second half was much better than the first.

    1. I wonder whether the plot would be confusing to those who don't know the story. But then again maybe everyone who saw the movie has read the book?

  8. Jet lag is the worst! I read Little Women a couple of years ago and was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I really need to see the film adaptation.

    1. We went this weekend. It was only showing at a few movie theaters in Houston. I was afraid it was going to go away before we got a chance to see it.

  9. I haven't yet seen the film of Little Women and really, really want to! I read all the books a lifetime ago and absolutely loved them. Jo was a marvellous character and I used her as a role model when I had my long hair cut short, aged 14. I've never grown it back:)). I hope your jet lag soon eases down. Rescue remedy is very good for helping overcome the symptoms. Have a good week, Deb:).

  11. Oh I'll definitely have to check out Little Woman. I'm still waiting for the day I can see it as a play and review it.

  12. I love Little Women! When I was younger I was always so mad that Jo didn't marry Laurie - but as an adult I saw they were all wrong for each other. :)

So many great looking picture books!!! I am sure we will end up reading some of them! :)

  14. I’m just calling last week, a lost week.
It’s been years since I read Little Women, or saw the movie. I’ll probably watch the remake at some point. Have you read Good Wives?

Wishing you a great reading week

  16. I definitely could describe my week as Little Women and more Little Women as well! I finished the book yesterday, watched the new film and the first episode of the tv series (I'm not obsessed, I swear :) ) I didn't know there was a modern adapation, let me know if you recommend it!
I agree on your club's answers to the usual questions as well.

    Have a great week!

  17. Oh, I must get my hands on the Annotated Little Women.

I requested Little Women on Prime...but now I want to check out Masterpiece for that earlier one.

    Thanks for sharing.

    1. I think the Masterpiece Little Women was from 2018. It's fairly recent, too. You would love the Annotated Little Women.

  18. I adore Little Women, and the 1990s adaptation is one of my favorites. I've yet to see the new version, but once it comes to streaming I'll be sure to add it to my watchlist.

I actually haven't read any of the sequels to Little Women-- too worried that I wouldn't like them, and they'd spoil my enjoyment of the first book. BUT I recently made it a goal to read more classics, and Jo's Boys and Little Men are both on my Classics Club reading list, so...time to get to it, I guess.

  20. Oh no, that link you shared is now going to take me down a rabbit hole of books I have to get my hands on right now. And oh yeah, children's books are just so so so much fun. There are literally many series that I'll just stand at a bookstore aisle and read.

  22. Agree with your book club's consensus about Little Women.. though there was a time when I was younger that i did hope Laurie and Jo had married, later I did see it was for the best they did not...and I need to go see the new movie soon as well.

  24. I'm re-reading the Little Women Books, so I've put The Annotated Little Women on reserve at my library. I just finished the first two (of four), but for the record the first two were later combined into one, using the Little Women title. I agree with you, Helen, that "the second half was much better than the first." Meaning ... what Louisa May Alcott published a year later as "GOOD WIVES" and was eventually added to the first book.
