Book Challenges; Lemon-Pecan Tea Bread; and Lots and Lots of Holiday Movies

After reading and drawing from 50 Ways to Draw Your Beautiful Ordinary Life every day since May, I finally finished it. What a wonderful experience. I'll share some photos of my little drawings at the end of the year.

I also read and loved Humans by Brandon Stanton. Stanton is the author of Humans of New York. He's known for interviewing and photographing strangers on the streets of New York. He expands his range in Humans and interviews and photographs strangers in forty countries around the world.

Are you interested in joining a book challenge in 2021? Susan from Bloggin' About Books has created a new site called Ready for a Reading Challenge to share the challenges others might like to join. You can also take a look at The 2021 Master List of Reading Challenges. I'm planning to do the Nonfiction Reader Challenge and the Back to the  Classics Challenge for 2021. I'm also hoping to do the Books in Translation Challenge (beginner) and the Japanese Literature Challenge.

Need gifts for book lovers? Take a look at these.

I loved the Chapter-a-Day Read-along of War and Peace this year. I plan to do some (all?) of the five books scheduled for the 2021 Chapter-a-Day Read-along: The Divine Comedy; Quo Vadis; The Hunchback of Notre Dame; David Copperfield; and The Three Musketeers. For more details, take a look here.

My dad has oodles of lemons. We have oodles of pecans. The result? Lemon-Pecan Tea Bread. I will make this again.

Good Thing #1:
My daughter-in-law, Lisa Chavarria, a reporter at the NBC affiliate in Chicago, was asked to interview author Marisel Vera about her new book, The Taste of Sugar. I was thrilled to watch Lisa conduct such a wonderful interview.

Good Thing #2:
I listened to an Action for Happiness meeting with meditation expert Jon Kabat-Zinn this week. "The world needs all its flowers," Kabat-Zinn said. "You are the flowering of life on earth." The talk will be archived here.

Good Thing #3:
We are determined to enjoy this holiday time, and every evening we choose a different Christmas movie (or audiobook or play) to watch. So far we have seen White Christmas; A Christmas Story; A Christmas Carol: Charlie Brown Christmas; How the Grinch Stole Christmas; The Holiday; and Miracle on 34th Street. We also listened to an audiobook, The Greatest Gift, the book behind It's a Wonderful Life. And we watched a play from Houston's Alley Theater, A Christmas Carol. What recommendations do you have for other Christmas movies and audiobooks that we might enjoy?

I'm happy you found your way to the Sunday Salon. Sunday Salon is a place for us to link up and to share what we have been doing during the week. It's a great way to visit other blogs and join in the conversations going on there.

  3. I just went through all the Christmas films and have basically not seen any of them! So weird!

  4. The combination of lemon and pecans sounds very good, though no one is about to give any of them to me. Looks like you are having a good week: all those classic movies.

  5. We have more lemons and oranges than we know what to do with this year. I think everybody's going to get a basketful for Christmas! That lemon-pecan bread sounds yummy. I'm currently reading White Ivy and enjoying it quite a lot, but I'm falling behind on writing my reviews of books I've already read. Got to get busy with that!

    1. My brother-in-law has sixty orange trees at his house, so we have plenty of oranges, too.

  6. I have yet to get in the holiday spirit this year. We get our Christmas tree tomorrow so I think that will help. But, I love the idea of a holiday something each night.

    1. I have lots of things---a Christmas soap dispenses, snowmen salt and pepper shakers, Christmas coffee mugs, and more---that people have given me in the past that I usually keep boxed up. Not this year. If it's a holiday something, I've got it sitting out. I will be merry.

  7. I've been busy with my 2021 reading challenges. I host 3 annually and I will continue with those. Now I've added another one to host - Netgalley and Edelweiss Reading Challenge. Plus, I signed up for 4 that others host that I do each year. I'll also be signing up for the Goodreads challenge even though I'm not going to complete this year.

I hope you have a great week!

  8. The lemon tea cakes look scrumptious. I made regular bread today and was very disappointed in it. Sigh...
My week was wonderful. My friend, Susan brought us both a quilt of our own for our Christmas present--a true labor of love. It made us feel very special. It was a good week, not as rushed now that grades are posted. (Thank goodness) I have already started on my plans and almost finished my syllabus for January. I am going to post what I've read, not this Sunday, but nest. I post "Sunday Summary" very other Sunday. The bookish things I did was make a trip to Half-Price Books and wrap a bunch of books I bought for Christmas presents. I received a recipe book for Christmas myself.

    1. I have a foolproof bread recipe, Rae, that I will share with you. I got it from Emma (from Words and Peace) after I met her in Chicago.

  9. Lemon Pecan Tea Bread sounds divine!

I follow Humans of New York on social media. I *love* the stories his interviewees share. They've all been so uplifting or full of love since the pandemic started.

Thanks for mentioning my Books in Translation challenge!

We've been watching the holiday editions of The Great British Baking Show over the past week or so. We're probably going to watch Jingle Jangle tonight. They're both on Netflix. White Christmas is one of our favorites.

    Enjoy your week!

  11. Humans sound intriguing. I see from a comment above that it is on social media, I will check that out.
We will spend the holidays on our own as per government "guidelines". Numbers are climbing too quickly here and more areas are going into lockdown.
Not a Christmas movie fan, but must watch Home Alone every year.
I will check those book challenges although I am not very good with sticking to them.

  13. Hi Debbie! Oh gosh, don't tempt me with the 2021 Challenges. I have highlighted 2 and then I want to do my own - Around the world in Eighty Books. That will be the most books I've read in a single year.

But The Chapter a day sounds like so much fun! My aunt loved Quo Vadis and I still have her battered old copy here. I've seen the movie with her once. Gave me goosebumps. Need to read the book too!

Love your Christmas movie/audio/play a day idea. My husband will be away this week and I think I will just curl up every night and watch Christmas movies.

Hope you will have a wonderful week and enjoy the season to be jolly!

    Lots of Love,

  15. I follow Stanton’s Facebook pages and his stories always reveal such amazing stories.
I really want a lemon tree, lemons are expensive here. I’m planning on making lemon cheesecake tarts for Christmas Day lunch :)
I’m not really a Christmas movie watcher, and there are barely any Australian ones though Babe sort of qualifies and I am sure you’d love it.

Wishing you a great reading week

  30. I love It Happened on Fifth Avenue which takes place right after WWII and features a very young Alan Hale and I also like The Shop Around the Corner with Jimmy Stewart. I don't think I'll get to watch either this year but I'm looking forward to watching them as an after Christmas treat. Lemon Pecan Tea Bread sounds like heaven and that's fabulous about your Daughter-in-law's interview. Hope you're having a great week.

I've been looking over the challenges too, deciding if I want to take some up. I think I will do the Nonfiction Reader Challenge. Maybe the Historical Fiction Challenge too.

I hope you have a great week!

  33. We're still in the overwhelming house-isn't-cleaned, piles-of-packages-keep-arriving, we'll-never-be-ready stage of holiday preparations. We mostly watch the animated Christmas specials from when my husband and I were kids -- The Grinch, Charlie Brown's Christmas, Rudolph, The Little Drummer Boy, etc. -- but one of my favorites is the wordless "The Snowman" which I only discovered as an adult.
