Sapphire Mining in Montana

We couldn't resist following up on an invitation to go to a sapphire mine while we were in Montana.

The miner is Bill, a friend of my husband's. He is not a professional miner. He is a retired health care professional who took out a lease on a federal mining claim, built his own sorting machines, and provides all the manual labor a mine like this takes. (And it takes a lot.)

We spent the morning with Bill. Here's what we saw.

Hundreds of pounds of rocks scooped up and put through the sorters...and the result? The three small (less than one carat in the rough) sapphires shown in the last photo.

Wondrous Words Wednesday is a weekly meme where you can share new words that you’ve encountered, or spotlight words you love.  Feel free to get creative! It was first created by Kathy over at Bermuda Onion and is now hosted at Elza Reads.

Weekend Cooking was created by Beth Fish Reads and is now hosted by Marg at The Intrepid Reader (and Baker). It is open to anyone who has any kind of food-related post to share: Book (novel, nonfiction) reviews, cookbook reviews, movie reviews, recipes, random thoughts, gadgets, quotations, photographs. If your post is even vaguely foodie, feel free to grab the button and link up anytime over the weekend. You do not have to post on the weekend. Please link to your specific post, not your blog's home page. For more information, see the welcome post.
